Common Summer Fire Hazards

People often associate home fire hazards with the winter season, from mismanaged fireplaces to Christmas trees left to dry into kindling. However, summer can present its own fire risks as well. Here are some dangers to be aware of as you and your family enjoy the warmer months at home.

In addition to following basic safety measures, like keeping fireworks away from children, homeowners should be aware of the danger even a seemingly benign sparkler can present to structures. Always ignite fireworks a safe distance from your home, which will most likely mean going out to the sidewalk or street rather than your patio or deck to celebrate.

Like fireworks, grills can be dangerous when used too close to your home. Make sure you have at least 10 feet of space between your grill and your home. Keep the area clear of overhead branches or structures as well. You can further maximize grill safety by keeping it clean, avoiding lighter fluid (use a charcoal or chimney starter instead), and keeping water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

Other Outdoor Heat Sources

On cooler summer nights, you may want to light a fire pit or run a patio heater. Like grills, these items should be placed at least 10 feet away from your home and away from hanging branches, structures, or flammable surfaces. Never leave these items running unattended.

Air Conditioners and Fans

Air conditioners, bathroom fans, and other exhaust systems can get filled with dirt and dust particles over time, obstructing air flow. If they are not cleaned regularly, the buildup of debris can cause overheating, smoldering,  and fire. It can be easy to lose track of fan maintenance; often people allow several years to pass before they clean their air conditioners or fans. Setting up a regular schedule with a professional maintenance company will help ensure that your fan systems are safe.
